James Brinsfield - small paintings - May 2024
About the small paintings: While small, they can still seem monumental like his large paintings. Jim often worked out ideas on paper as he painted his large stretched linen or canvas paintings. Many of these ideas, while not necessarily being transferred to a larger work, solved a problem or answered a question, and stand alone themselves as resolved artwork.
Jim worked diligently on this particular series of paintings in spring 2024, completing them in late May and indicating these were in honor of our long working relationship with him, and a way for folks to own an original artwork at a modest price. Unknown to us until after receiving these paintings from Jim, he was battling cancer and going through painful treatments at the time and after. A great loss for us and the art world, James Brinsfield passed away on Saturday, September 21, 2024 in his studio with his partner Alice Thorson at his side. We share this news with sadness, but also with the privilege of having known him as a friend and a great artist.
Enjoy these artworks knowing they were created in the spirit of investigation and thoughtfulness, and are among the last paintings this great artist completed.
