Biography

Warren Rosser recently retired as Chair of the Painting Department at the Kansas City Art Institute after 28 years. Born in South Wales in the UK, Rosser moved to the US in 1972. One of Rosser's long time interests is the relationship between the work of art and the viewer and that a "painting" does not always be vertical on the wall facing a viewer at eye level.  Investigating this issue thoroughly, he has made sculptural constructions that exist both on the wall and floor simultaneously.  Related to this are investigations of the "space" an art work occupies and as compared to the space it is seen in.  In different periods he has made constructed works that could be interpreted as sculpture, and at other times more conventional paintings, but always addressing their placement in space. His work examines an abstract language, exploring architectural forms and constructed space with particular attention being paid to color and its transitions and subtleties.

Printmaking is another tool Rosser utilizes to explore different attitudes to form and, particularly in his most recent monoprints, the multi-layer of color transparences creating deep implied space.
